The big boys are back again… … Our 2008 trophy rockfish season has finally started as good numbers of huge stripers have finally arrived!!! Since last Friday (11/7/08) we have been trolling our 23 rod spread hooking up with some great fish from about 35" to 46". Saturday morning we had a great crew of ten people and started off with excellent fishing for our resident fish to get some keepers in the box. After everyone had had their fill of chunky 19-24" resident stripers, we released a few more and headed to deep water to try our luck on some big ones. We were quickly rewarded with three big trophies in the first hour. The steady bite continued through the afternoon as we caught four more beautiful fat trophies. We ended the day with 7 trophies three over forty and one around 46, a limit of 13 nice size schoolies, and some great weather. Sunday started off fast and furious with two fish over forty inches hooked up at the same time before we even got all of the rods in the water. The morning bite slowed a little than the later bite turned on up as the sun came up. We finished off the beautiful Sunday with our limit of 8 trophies up to 44 inches with four citations (over 40"). We will have these big stripers in the bay for the remainder of the year and the fishing will only get better. We finished off the week with some more great fishing on Thursday with a nice limit of chunky 34-39" rockfish. Updated Report! Since Friday the 7th fishing has only improved... ... I along with my father and family friends booked the Fin Finder and entered the MSSA fall tournament. Even with a very nasty weather forcast this weekend and gale force winds expected we fished for 9 hours each day in seas up to six feet high. Although tired and beat up after two days of hard "combat fishing" we boated a conservative estimate of 60+ trophies during the two day tournament. The action was very very good Sunday as we found a new batch of ocean run stripers that had just moved into the bay. These are beautiful big fat healthy rockfish and are finally here in great numbers! With the bar set high with a 53 pound fish caught sunday morning, we did not catch any fish large enough to place in thetwenty eight thousand dollar tournament. I am estimating over the two day tournament we caught and released at least 15-20 citations and around 40-50 fish over 34 inches. Fishing is excellent right now and I would go as far as saying it does not get much better for both numbers of fish seen in the bay so far as well as an excellent grade of fish. Don't miss your opportunity for some tasty rockfish fillets on the table for Thanksgiving dinner or some great photos to share with family and friends over the holidays! !!
